About us

Grasso Consulting Engineers

Grasso Consulting Engineers is a consulting engineering practice in Milsons Point, Sydney, offering civil engineering, structural engineering and project management since 2002.

The practice

The basis of the practice is a personalised service, where the client’s project is looked after by a director. Our aim is to protect the client’s interests with cost-effective, practical designs that are properly detailed, so accurate information reaches everyone involved in design development and construction.

Our wealth of experience, innovation and the latest computer design aids and software let us provide practical designs across residential, commercial, industrial and community buildings, and across the demolition of some of the largest structures in New South Wales.

Our history

Jim Grasso graduated in civil engineering from the University of Technology Sydney in 1982 and completed a Master of Engineering Science in structural engineering at the University of Sydney in 1992. His early career covered multi-storey office buildings, earthquake-resistant design, hotels, shopping centres, schools, factories, water treatment works, hospitals, roads, drainage and mining, and infrastructure projects such as the Sydney Harbour Tunnel.

From the mid-1990s his work turned increasingly to the demolition of major structures: the State Office Block, Westfield Centrepoint, the Sydney Hilton, the Darling Harbour convention and exhibition centres, and dozens of CBD office towers and bridges. Grasso Consulting Engineers Pty Ltd was established in 2002.

Our expertise

Design of residential, commercial and industrial buildings in reinforced concrete, post-tensioned concrete and structural steel, with extensive experience in timber-framed structures. Demolition engineering for high-rise buildings, bridges, chimneys and industrial plant, including temporary works, façade retention, slab propping, shoring and the design of lifting cradles and rigging for heavy lifts. Expert witness work in the Land and Environment Court of NSW.

More than 40 years in structural and civil engineering, and three decades advising on the demolition of the structures most engineers only design.

Jim has provided structural engineering advice on the demolition of major multistorey buildings, bridges, mining and ancillary structures across New South Wales and Queensland. His regular clients include the four major demolition contractors in both states. He is involved in planning from the outset, assists in preparing the demolition methodology, and reviews, modifies where necessary and approves the structural engineering content of the work method statements.

He has been a board director of the Association of Consulting Structural Engineers NSW (2001–2005 and 2011), has lectured second-year civil engineering students at the University of Sydney on the demolition of structures, and has appeared as an expert witness in a number of hearings in the Land and Environment Court of NSW.
